Dana Naldrett biography
Dana’s photography skills are applied to producing fine-art prints, stock images in digital and paper format, teaching photography courses, and conducting photographic tours. As a professional photographer, he also does commercial photography of architecture, landscaping, and interiors.
Dana has been involved in film and digital photography for over 30 years. He has worked on candid, sports, and scientific photography, but his passion is for landscape, wildlife and fine-art photography. Working as a college and university professor, and an environmental consultant, Dana has had the good fortune to travel extensively throughout Scandinavia, North America, Western Europe and the Caribbean. Having traveled a lot, his favourite places for photography remain the mountains and the west coast of North America.
Dana was born and raised in Kingston, Ontario Canada. As a child, he was fascinated by the whole process of taking pictures and then producing prints. When he was quite young, his father gave him a Kodak Instamatic camera and promised that when Dana had learned to properly compose pictures, he would receive a better camera. Dana was also given an unlimited supply of film, as long as the images produced passed his father’s critical review. Dana soon earned a Nikkormat FTn SLR camera, and has gone full speed ahead with photography since then.
While Dana was at high school and university, he worked on sports (football and gymnastics), nature, architectural, yearbook and newsletter photography. At that time, he learned darkroom skills with black and white, and later colour images. He also experimented with various types of lithographic film and printing, giving strictly black with no mid-tone shades.
As a young adult, Dana moved to Calgary Alberta Canada to be close to the Rocky Mountains. Every opportunity is now spent exploring the mountains and wildlife of western Canada and the United States. This has allowed the development of an extensive portfolio of images which are shown in the galleries. Although Dana has used many types of cameras including Canon, Contax, Kodak, Mamiya, Nikon, Pentax, and Voightländer his current system of choice is Nikon. Similarly, while he has used many brands of photo printers, his favourites are currently Canon. Photo paper varies, depending on the application.
